Free Dr Hussam Abu Safiya

Free Dr Hussam Abu Safiya

On 27 December 2024, Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital in North Gaza and detained Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital director and a devoted paediatrician. Alongside him, medical staff and patients were also taken. This raid forced the last functioning major hospital in the North Gaza governorate out of service.

This wasn’t the first attack. In October 2024, Israeli forces raided the same hospital, detaining doctors and patients. Despite these devastating setbacks, Dr Abu Safiya and his colleagues fought tirelessly to re-open the hospital and continue treating those in desperate need.

His courage has saved countless lives. Now we must save his.

On 9 January, an Israeli court extended his detention until 13 February under the Unlawful Combatants Law, a law often used to arbitrarily detain Palestinians without evidence.

Sign the petition now and demand that Israeli authorities:

  • Immediately release Dr Hussam Abu Safiya and all arbitrarily detained Palestinians, including healthcare workers protected under international law.
  • Disclose his whereabouts and protect him from torture or mistreatment.
  • Grant him access to legal counsel and proper medical care.

Healthcare workers belong in hospitals, not detention cells.

Prime Minister and Health Minister,

I am writing to you as a concerned constituent regarding the urgent issue of medicine affordability in Australia. Right now, too many Australians are being forced to choose between their health and their financial stability. Over 900,000 Australians have delayed or skipped prescriptions because they simply cannot afford them. 30% of Australian adults have gone without vital medication, putting their well-being at serious risk. Women are disproportionately impacted, with 1 in 10 forced to choose between their health and their wallet. No one should have to gamble with their health because of prescription costs. Yet, every day, Australians face tough choices, taking their prescribed medication or paying rent, rationing doses or watching their condition deteriorate. Some end up in hospitals. Others don’t make it that far. This is a public health emergency. I urge you to take decisive action to:

Reduce the cost of all PBS-listed medicines

Expand access to cheaper long-term prescriptions

Ensure no Australian is forced to go without life-saving medication due to cost

The rising cost of living should not come at the expense of people’s health. I look forward to your response and to seeing real action taken to protect Australians’ health.

Sincerely,

Name
