The Treaty of Waitangi is the foundation of New Zealand’s identity, protecting the unique relationship between Māori and the Crown. For nearly two centuries, it has upheld Māori rights to land, language, and culture, ensuring their voices are heard through mechanisms like the Waitangi Tribunal.
David Seymour’s proposed Treaty Principles Bill threatens to undo this progress. By extending the Treaty’s application to all New Zealanders, it erases the special status of Māori as Treaty partners, undermining the protections that generations have fought tirelessly to secure.
If passed, this bill could set a dangerous precedent, opening the door to further erosion of Māori rights.
We must not let this happen.
The integrity of the Treaty must be preserved to honour the promises made and ensure justice for Māori communities.
